I Hate To Say It, But Put Down The Starbucks, Friends.
The thought of giving up a Venti-Triple-Red-Eye-With-Extra-Foam on a chilly fall morning hurts my soul a little. But new research reaffirms that women trying to get pregnant should ditch the caffeine addiction.
I can hear it now: “Whatttt? That can’t actually be true. What a load of California hippy BS, am I right? My Granny’s Granny drank espresso that was as thick as syrup, straight out of the pot, and had 4 burly kids that were. just. fine.”
Wellllllll, your Granny’s Granny was also probably in her late teens or early twenties when she started having kids and the body at that age can make up for a lot of off-roading when it comes to conception protocol.
Research continues to find correlations between caffeine and miscarriage. The latest study from researchers at the National Institutes of Health and Ohio State University found that a woman is more likely to miscarry if she and her partner drink more than two caffeinated beverages a day during the weeks leading up to conception. Similarly, women who drank more than two daily caffeinated beverages during the first seven weeks of pregnancy were also more likely to miscarry.
And don’t let your partner gloat in all his glory when he reaches for the espresso. Findings also indicate that the male partner’s intake matters too. “Male preconception consumption of caffeinated beverages was just as strongly associated with pregnancy loss as females’,” explains Dr. Buck Louis, one of the leading researchers involved in the study.
And its not just miscarriage that’s effected by caffeine. Another study found that a 120 mM/ml dose of caffeine causes complete immobilization of human spermatozoa. Considering there are 77 mM/mls of caffeine in one shot of espresso, your dude’s got to curb his caffeine cravings in order to insure that his swimmers can swim.
Another interesting study on rats found that caffeine treatment for 4 weeks impaired reproductive organs weight, sperm characteristics, LH/FSH level, and also testicular cyto-architecture. The good news is that effects appeared reversible after caffeine withdrawal.
So hop off the Starbucks line and ditch the caffeine habit to ensure you’re giving your body the best shot at fertility success.
