Cervical Secretions: The Most Important Predictor of Ovulation
Watching the changes in your cervical secretions is THE most significant way to know when you’re ovulating (aka when to have unprotected sex). Before ovulation, cervical secretions become slippery and more fluid in order to help sperm travel through the cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes. By recognizing the changing characteristics of your cervical mucus, you can predict when you’re about to ovulate. In turn, this may help you determine when you’re most likely to conceive.
Generally your secretions will follow the below monthly pattern:
- Post Period: No noticeable cervical secretions for three to four days after your period ends
- Top of Week 2: Yellow or white, scanty, cloudy and sticky secretions for the next several days
- Bottom of Week 2: EGGWHITE LIKE, abundant, clear and wet secretions for the next three to four days = Pre ovulation and ovulation!
- Week 3 and 4: Dry or no noticeable cervical secretions for 11 to 14 days until your next period begins
So how to examine your cervical mucus?:
- When you’re in the bathroom wipe front to back before and after urinating.
- Note that when you are about to ovulate, you will have what’s called FERTILE MUCUS. It is a slippery, clear, egg-white consistency. This is your body yelling at you to have unprotected sex for the next 4 days straight (5 to be sure). Once your mucus changes consistency back to thick, dry, crumbly, you’re ovulation window has closed.
Start taking notice of your cervical mucus. If you need pictures to get a better understanding of the consistency differences this blog is pretty explicit and informative:
