In The Wise Words of Carly Simon, I Haven’t Got Time For The Pain.
Are Painful Periods Normal?
Though painful periods are common and experienced by more than half of all menstruating women, they are not normal. Painful periods that require you to regularly take time off of work or school, require pain medication to manage, or result in severe nausea, vomiting, and dizziness are a sign that there are unusually high levels of prostaglandins, hormone-like inflammatory chemicals in the body.
When prostaglandins are elevated, they can cause severe uterine contractions and formation of blood clots. Severe contractions can further constrict the blood vessels around the uterus leads to even more pain and stagnation in the circulation.
Some common causes behind painful periods are:
- Endometriosis
- Uterine fibroids
- Adenomyosis
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Cervical stenosis
The causes behind painful periods are also associated with subfertility and infertility. If you suffer from painful periods, and especially if you are also trying to conceive, know that acupuncture and treatment can help. We’ll help identify the root cause of the pain and work to unblock any stagnation, return you prostaglandin levels to normal and resolve tissue dysfunction.
