The question of whether acupuncture improves IVF success rates is one we get asked constantly — and it deserves a careful, honest answer rather than either dismissal or overselling. Here’s what the research actually shows, what it means clinically, and why we believe the evidence supports acupuncture as a meaningful adjunct to IVF.

The research landscape: what we know

The evidence base for acupuncture in IVF has evolved significantly over the past 20 years. The early landmark studies in the early 2000s showed promising results; subsequent meta-analyses have been more mixed. Here’s what the research consistently supports:

What is well-supported

  • Improved uterine blood flow — multiple Doppler ultrasound studies have documented that acupuncture increases uterine artery blood flow, which directly improves endometrial receptivity
  • Reduced anxiety and cortisol — stress hormones suppress reproductive hormones and impair IVF outcomes. Acupuncture’s effect on the HPA axis is one of its most consistently documented mechanisms
  • Improved endometrial thickness — several studies and extensive clinical observation support acupuncture’s role in improving lining development
  • Better ovarian response in poor responders — women with diminished ovarian reserve or poor response to stimulation show improved follicle development with acupuncture
  • Reduced OHSS risk — acupuncture appears to moderate ovarian response in high-responders, reducing the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation
  • Improved embryo quality — through egg quality optimization in the months before retrieval

Where the research is more nuanced

Studies looking at same-day transfer acupuncture alone — treating patients only on the day of transfer — show inconsistent results. Some show benefit; others show no significant difference. This makes sense clinically: one treatment on the day of transfer cannot meaningfully influence egg quality, embryo development, or the months of uterine preparation that determine implantation success.

The studies that show the strongest benefit are those that include acupuncture throughout the IVF cycle — during stimulation, retrieval support, and lining preparation — not just on transfer day.

The research clearly demonstrates how beneficial acupuncture is for IVF success. What those studies do not measure, though, is the degree of nervous system regulation and deep emotional support that we also provide at Aphrodite. This supports helps to offload the mental-emotional burden of IVF and infertility and create a space where not only results improve – but a deep stamina and resiliency are also being built at the same time.

The mechanisms: why acupuncture works for IVF

Ovarian blood flow and follicle development

The ovaries need excellent circulation to develop follicles properly and respond well to stimulation medications. Acupuncture consistently improves ovarian blood flow — measurable by Doppler ultrasound — which means better nutrient and oxygen delivery to developing eggs. In practical terms, this often means more follicles recruited, better synchronized development, and higher-quality eggs at retrieval.

Uterine receptivity

Implantation failure — even with genetically normal embryos — is one of the most significant and frustrating IVF challenges. Uterine receptivity depends on a complex interplay of lining thickness, lining architecture, blood flow, immune environment, and hormonal signaling. Acupuncture influences all of these. We regularly see patients whose lining was consistently thin in previous cycles develop optimal thickness after 6–8 weeks of consistent acupuncture.

Acupuncture is very supportive in thickening uterine lining that may be affected by factors such as poor blood flow, low hormone receptivity, and subtle chronic low grade inflammation of the endometrium. In all of these cases, we see patients develop linings that are within the ideal range and tissue structure in prep for an embryo transfer in a way that medications are unable to do alone.

HPA axis regulation: the cortisol connection

IVF is extraordinarily stressful. Cortisol — the primary stress hormone — directly suppresses GnRH, which drives the entire reproductive hormonal cascade. High cortisol during an IVF cycle can impair medication response, reduce lining development, and suppress progesterone in the luteal phase.

Acupuncture is one of the most effective tools available for down-regulating the HPA axis. In practical terms, patients under consistent acupuncture care report significantly lower anxiety during IVF, better sleep during stim, and more emotional stability through the two-week wait.

Egg quality: the 90-day window

This is the mechanism that gets the least attention in IVF research and the most attention in our practice. Egg quality is determined over a 90-day maturation cycle. Acupuncture started in the months before retrieval — combined with mitochondrial supplements — improves the cellular energy available to developing eggs, resulting in better fertilization rates, better blastocyst development, and better embryo quality at retrieval.

Studies that only measure same-day transfer acupuncture cannot capture this effect at all. It’s why the research that focuses on the full cycle produces the strongest results.

What we do differently: the Aphrodite IVF protocol

Our IVF protocol is built around the understanding that egg quality takes three months to optimize and that same-day transfer acupuncture, while valuable, is the least important part of what we offer.

  • Month 1–3 before retrieval: weekly acupuncture focused on ovarian blood flow, egg quality, and hormonal baseline optimization alongside the full mitochondrial supplement protocol
  • Stimulation phase: every 3–5 days, supporting follicle development, moderating ovarian response, and managing medication side effects
  • Retrieval: day-before and day-after treatment for nervous system support and recovery
  • Lining preparation (FET patients): weekly treatment focused on uterine blood flow, lining thickness, and hormonal support
  • Transfer day: pre- and post-transfer treatment — we offer on-site acupuncture at several San Diego fertility clinics
  • Two-week wait: weekly support for progesterone, uterine calm, and emotional regulation

As acupuncturists, we get front row seats to see tthe before-and-after of acupuncture during the whole cascade of IVF treatment. We have seen improvements across each phase of treatment – higher antral follicle counts, better embryo quality, healthier linings, and integrative protocols that treat even the toughest recurrent miscarriage cases.

Frequently asked questions

Does my fertility clinic recommend acupuncture?

Most fertility clinics in San Diego are supportive of acupuncture as an adjunct therapy. Many actively refer patients to us. If your RE hasn’t mentioned it, that doesn’t mean they’re opposed — they simply may not have brought it up. We encourage transparency with your clinical team and are happy to communicate with your RE if helpful.

What if I can only start acupuncture one or two weeks before my transfer?

Starting late is better than not starting at all. With two weeks before transfer, we focus on maximizing uterine blood flow, supporting lining thickness, and preparing your nervous system for the transfer. It’s not the ideal timeline, but it’s not without value. For future cycles, we’d strongly encourage starting 2–3 months out.

Can acupuncture help after a failed IVF cycle?

Absolutely — and this is one of the most important times to engage with acupuncture. After a failed cycle, there are always questions about what happened and what can be done differently. We work with patients to assess the cycle, identify what may have been suboptimal, and build a better protocol for the next attempt.

Does insurance cover acupuncture for IVF support?

Some insurance plans cover acupuncture, often for specific indications. Fertility acupuncture specifically is rarely covered, but the acupuncture itself may be reimbursable depending on your plan. We recommend checking with your insurance provider. We can provide documentation of treatment for submission if needed.
