When women ask us how to boost fertility naturally, they usually mean one of two things: they want to improve their chances of conceiving without medical intervention, or they want to do everything possible to support an upcoming IVF cycle. The answer to both questions is the same- and it starts with understanding what fertility actually is at a biological level.
Fertility is not a fixed state. It’s a dynamic, changeable expression of your overall health: your hormonal balance, your cellular energy production, your inflammation levels, your nutritional status, and your nervous system regulation. All of these are moveable. All of them respond to targeted intervention. This is the protocol we use at Aphrodite Fertility Acupuncture.
The 90-day window and why timing matters
The most important thing to understand about natural fertility optimization is that it operates on a 90-day timeline. That’s how long it takes for a primordial follicle (essentially a sleeping egg cell) to mature into the egg you’ll ovulate in any given cycle.
This means that the supplements you take today, the food you eat this week, the acupuncture you receive this month – all of it directly influences the quality of the eggs you’ll be releasing three months from now. This is why we ask patients to commit to a minimum of three months before evaluating results.
Pillar 1: Fertility acupuncture
Acupuncture is the cornerstone of everything we do at Aphrodite. Weekly treatments throughout your cycle allow us to influence your reproductive system in real time – adjusting to where you are hormonally and what your body needs at each phase.
The mechanisms are well-documented in the research:
- Improved ovarian blood flow – better circulation to the ovaries means better nutrient delivery to developing follicles
- Uterine lining quality – acupuncture consistently improves endometrial thickness and receptivity
- Hormonal regulation – FSH, LH, estradiol, progesterone, and cortisol all respond to acupuncture treatment
- Inflammation reduction – systemic inflammation is one of the most under-addressed fertility disruptors, and acupuncture is one of the most effective anti-inflammatory interventions available
- Nervous system regulation – chronic stress suppresses reproductive hormones via the HPA axis. Acupuncture directly downregulates the stress response
Patients think that they are just coming in to reduce their stress, but what they are surprised by is the tangible change in their hormone values change, their decreased bloating and puffiness, their better deeper sleep, thier vibrancy. And of course their healthy happy pregnancy
Pillar 2: Mitochondrial health
This is the frontier of fertility medicine and it’s where we see the most dramatic results in our practice. Eggs are the most mitochondria-dense cells in the human body. They require enormous amounts of cellular energy to mature, fertilize, and divide properly. When mitochondrial function is compromised, egg quality suffers.
Our core mitochondrial protocol for fertility patients:
- CoQ10 (ubiquinol, 400–600mg daily) — the most evidence-backed fertility supplement in existence. Essential for mitochondrial energy production in eggs
- NAD+ precursors — NMN or NR at 250–500mg daily. NAD+ declines with age and is central to mitochondrial function
- Spermidine (1–2mg daily) — a polyamine that triggers mitophagy, essentially a cellular deep-clean of damaged mitochondria
- Mitopure / Urolithin A (500mg daily) — one of the most exciting developments in reproductive longevity research. Clinically studied for mitochondrial rejuvenation
- PQQ (10–20mg daily) — stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis — the growth of new mitochondria
- Alpha lipoic acid — a fat and water-soluble antioxidant that crosses the mitochondrial membrane
| On supplement quality The difference between a high-quality supplement and a cheap one is enormous – both in terms of bioavailability and actual effect. We’ve researched the brands behind each of these recommendations carefully. Our full curated protocols are at aphroditefertility.com/protocols-for-fertility |
Pillar 3: Targeted nutrition
Fertility nutrition is not about eating clean or following a particular diet philosophy. It’s about giving your body the specific raw materials it needs for hormone production, egg development, and uterine health.
What to prioritize
Protein – significantly more than you think. We recommend a minimum of 1 gram per pound of body weight daily. Amino acids are the building blocks of every hormone in your body. Under-eating protein is one of the most common and most correctable fertility mistakes we see.
Red meat 3–4 times per week. Heme iron, zinc, B12, carnitine, and creatine — all critical for egg quality, uterine health, and energy metabolism. If you’ve been avoiding red meat, this may be one of the most impactful dietary changes you can make.
Egg yolks daily. Choline, fat-soluble vitamins, and cholesterol — the precursor to all steroid hormones including estrogen and progesterone. Don’t avoid the yolk.
Liver once a week. The most nutrient-dense food on the planet. Extraordinarily rich in bioavailable iron, B12, folate, copper, and vitamin A. If you can tolerate it, nothing comes close.
Warm cooked foods, especially in the follicular and luteal phases. Cold foods and drinks cause vasoconstriction that reduces blood flow to the reproductive organs. Prioritize warm soups, stews, cooked vegetables, and warm grains.
What to reduce
- Alcohol — even moderate consumption affects egg quality, hormonal balance, and liver function
- Ultra-processed foods — the inflammatory load disrupts hormonal signaling
- Excess caffeine — more than one cup of coffee daily has been associated with reduced fertility in multiple studies
- Cold beverages and foods — especially smoothies, iced drinks, and raw salads in large quantities
Pillar 4: Lifestyle optimization
Sleep- treat it like medicine. Melatonin, produced during deep sleep, is a powerful antioxidant that directly protects egg quality. Seven to nine hours of quality sleep is one of the most powerful fertility interventions available and one of the most neglected.
Warm feet, warm abdomen. A hot water bottle on the lower abdomen in the evenings, socks on cold floors, avoiding cold exposure to the lower body. These are clinical recommendations rooted in both Chinese medicine and basic physiology. Vasoconstriction reduces blood flow to the uterus and ovaries. Warmth does the opposite.
Reduce endocrine disruptors. BPA and phthalates in plastics, parabens in personal care products, synthetic fragrances, pesticide residues in food — all of these directly interfere with hormonal signaling. Switch to glass storage, fragrance-free products, and organic produce where possible.
Movement – moderate and consistent. Walking, Pilates, swimming, and yoga support fertility. High-intensity exercise raises cortisol and can suppress ovulation. This is worth discussing with us based on your individual situation.
A lot of our patients are surprised to hear that we also request that they unscheduling their lives, gearing down to one scheduled activity a day is preferred. A rushed life is one that signals to the body that there is something to fear.
Pillar 5: Nervous system regulation
Chronic stress is not just an emotional experience – it’s a physiological one. Cortisol and adrenaline, released during stress, directly suppress the reproductive hormones needed for ovulation and implantation. This is a biological survival mechanism: your body won’t prioritize reproduction when it perceives threat.
Acupuncture is one of the most effective nervous system regulators available. But we also work with our patients on breathwork, sleep hygiene, boundary-setting, and the emotional weight of the fertility journey itself. The mental health piece is not separate from the clinical piece, they are the same thing.
Frequently asked questions
How quickly can I expect to see results from a natural fertility protocol?
The honest answer is three months minimum – that’s the length of an egg maturation cycle. Some patients see changes in their cycle quality, energy, and lab markers within the first month. Pregnancy outcomes typically take 2–4 cycles of consistent protocol.
Can I do this alongside IVF?
Absolutely – and we highly encourage it. Everything in this protocol supports IVF outcomes: better egg quality means better embryos, better uterine lining means better implantation rates, better nervous system regulation means better medication response. We’ve partnered with every major fertility clinic in San Diego and we’re very familiar with how to time our treatments around IVF protocols.
I have PCOS / endometriosis / low AMH. Does this protocol still apply?
Yes, with modifications. Specific conditions require specific adjustments. PCOS patients need particular attention to blood sugar and insulin, endometriosis patients need an aggressive anti-inflammatory approach, low AMH patients need focused mitochondrial support. We tailor the protocol to your individual picture at every appointment.
Do I need to see you in person or can I work with you virtually?
Both options are available. In-person patients in San Diego receive weekly acupuncture plus all the nutritional, supplemental, and lifestyle guidance. Virtual patients receive the full coaching protocol: supplements, nutrition, lifestyle, cycle optimization — without the acupuncture component. Many of our virtual patients combine our coaching with local acupuncture in their own city.
