Gimme that

If you’re doing IVF in San Diego, you’ve probably been told a version of this: “acupuncture might help, it can’t hurt, some patients find it relaxing.” That’s not wrong — but it dramatically undersells what a properly timed, clinically sophisticated acupuncture protocol can actually do for your IVF outcomes.

At Aphrodite Fertility Acupuncture, we’ve partnered with every major fertility clinic in San Diego. We know the protocols, we know the timelines, we know what your RE is doing and why — and we know exactly how to time acupuncture treatment to complement each phase of your IVF cycle for maximum effect.

Here’s what we wish every IVF patient in San Diego knew before they started.

The research — what acupuncture actually does for IVF

The evidence base for acupuncture in IVF has grown significantly over the past decade. Here’s what the research consistently shows:

  • Improved ovarian response to stimulation medications — better follicle recruitment and more synchronized development
  • Higher blastocyst rates — better quality embryos from better quality eggs
  • Improved endometrial receptivity — thicker, more trilaminar lining with better blood flow
  • Reduced medication side effects — less bloating, cramping, and emotional dysregulation during stim
  • Better implantation rates — particularly when acupuncture is timed around the transfer itself
  • Reduced miscarriage risk in early pregnancy — through progesterone support and inflammation reduction

I’ve consistently seen improvements in endometrial lining thickness when acupuncture is paired with the right supplements and supportive therapies like moxibustion. Moxibustion, a gentle heat therapy, helps increase blood flow to the uterus and supports a more receptive, well-nourished lining for implantation, and it’s one of our favorite Eastern medicine tools here at Aphrodite.

When to start — the timeline that matters

This is the most important and most misunderstood piece. Most IVF patients start acupuncture the week of their transfer — sometimes even the day of. While same-day transfer acupuncture does have value, it misses the most critical window.

The ideal start time is 2–3 months before your retrieval. Here’s why: egg quality is determined over a 90-day maturation cycle. The follicles that will be retrieved in your IVF cycle began their development three months ago. Acupuncture started the week of retrieval cannot influence egg quality — that window has already closed.

Starting 2–3 months out allows us to:

  • Improve the quality of the eggs that will be retrieved
  • Optimize your ovarian response to stimulation medications
  • Build and maintain uterine lining quality before the transfer
  • Regulate your hormonal baseline before medications are introduced
  • Reduce your cortisol load — which directly affects medication response
If you can’t start 3 months out, starting even 4–6 weeks before retrieval is significantly better than starting at transfer. And if you’re doing a frozen embryo transfer (FET), starting 6–8 weeks before transfer gives us meaningful time to work with your lining and hormonal environment.

Phase by phase — what we do at each stage of IVF

Pre-stimulation (priming phase)

Before your medications begin, we focus on your baseline hormonal health — FSH, AMH, antral follicle count, estradiol. We work to optimize ovarian blood flow, reduce inflammation, and support your nervous system ahead of the hormonal load that’s coming.

Stimulation (stim phase)

During stim, we treat every 3–5 days. We support follicular development, help synchronize follicle growth, reduce the side effects of medications, and monitor your response. Many of our patients report significantly less bloating and emotional volatility during stim compared to previous cycles without acupuncture.

We then adapt our acupuncture treatments based on follicular development. If growth is slow, we increase treatment frequency and focus on local abdominal points to enhance medication receptivity. If follicles over-respond, we shift to distal points on the limbs to encourage fluid metabolism and moderate the body’s systemic response.

Retrieval support

We treat the day before retrieval to support your nervous system and optimize blood flow to the ovaries. Many patients also receive treatment the day after retrieval to support recovery and reduce inflammation.

Transfer — the day-of protocol

Same-day transfer acupuncture is the most well-researched application of acupuncture in IVF. We offer on-site acupuncture at several San Diego fertility clinics, meaning we can treat you in the clinic itself — before and after your transfer without you having to travel.

The pre-transfer treatment focuses on uterine blood flow, lining receptivity, and nervous system regulation. The post-transfer treatment focuses on maintaining uterine calm, supporting progesterone, and reducing the anxiety of the two-week wait.

The two-week wait (TWW)

The two-week wait is one of the most emotionally challenging parts of the IVF process. We continue weekly treatment during this period — supporting progesterone production, maintaining uterine blood flow, and providing the emotional support that makes this time more bearable.

Our relationships with San Diego fertility clinics

We’ve spent years building relationships with the reproductive endocrinologists and clinical teams at San Diego’s top fertility clinics. We understand their protocols, their preferences, and their patients. We communicate with your clinical team when needed and we understand the exact medications you’re taking and why.

This matters because good adjunct care is coordinated care. We’re not doing something separate from your IVF protocol — we’re supporting it from every angle we have access to.

We work most closely with Dr. Chang at Hanabusa IVF, Dr. Davis at Shady Grove Fertility, and Dr. Foyouzi at Southern California Fertility Center—incredible reproductive endocrinologists who truly prioritize patient care. At Aphrodite, our familiarity with each clinic’s protocols allows us to guide patients on what to expect while staying closely aligned and helping interpret any changes along the way. We also offer on-site pre- and post-transfer acupuncture to support implantation and overall transfer success.

What about the cost?

IVF is expensive. Adding weekly acupuncture to the equation is a real consideration. Here’s how we think about it:

A single IVF cycle in San Diego typically costs between $15,000 and $30,000 when medications are included. The cost of 3 months of weekly acupuncture at Aphrodite is a fraction of that. If acupuncture meaningfully improves your chances of success in this cycle — reduces the likelihood of a failed cycle and a second attempt — the return on investment is significant.

We also offer a new patient appointment at $250 and return visits at $118. Many patients find that twice-weekly treatment during stim and the two-week wait, and once-weekly at other times, is the right balance of support and cost.

Frequently asked questions

My RE didn’t mention acupuncture. Should I tell them I’m adding it?

Yes — always. We encourage full transparency with your fertility clinic. In our experience, the vast majority of REs in San Diego are supportive of acupuncture as an adjunct therapy. Some actively refer patients to us. If your RE has concerns, we’re happy to speak with them directly.

Can acupuncture help after a failed IVF cycle?

This is actually where we see some of our most meaningful work. After a failed cycle, there’s usually something to investigate — whether it’s lining quality, embryo quality, implantation factors, or simply the emotional and physiological toll of the process. We help patients understand what may have contributed to the failure and how to optimize before the next attempt.

I have a frozen embryo transfer coming up. When should I start?

As soon as possible, ideally 6–8 weeks before your planned transfer date. For FET, the primary focus is uterine lining preparation — thickness, receptivity, blood flow — alongside nervous system regulation and progesterone support. The earlier we start, the more we can do.

Do you offer on-site acupuncture at fertility clinics?

Yes. We offer on-site acupuncture at several San Diego fertility clinics, where we treat patients immediately before and after their embryo transfers. Contact us to find out if we work with your specific clinic, or we can discuss how to make same-day transfer acupuncture work for you.

Can acupuncture help with the emotional side of IVF?

Absolutely — and we consider this just as important as the physical side. IVF is one of the most emotionally demanding experiences a person can go through. Acupuncture directly regulates the stress response, reduces anxiety, and improves sleep. Many of our patients tell us that the emotional support they receive at Aphrodite is as valuable as the clinical treatment.
