If you just got a lab result back and someone used the words “low AMH” or “diminished ovarian reserve,” first things first: take a breath. We know how much weight those words can carry, and we want you to know you are in exactly the right place.
Let’s talk about what this actually means, what it doesn’t mean, and most importantly, what we can do together.
So, What Even Is AMH?
AMH stands for Anti-Müllerian Hormone, and it’s one of the key markers we look at to understand your ovarian reserve, basically how many eggs you have available in your ovaries at this point in time.
Here’s the thing: AMH is a snapshot, not a sentence. It tells us about egg quantity, but it says very little about egg quality, and quality is what makes babies. Women conceive with low AMH every single day. This number does not tell your whole story.
Diminished Ovarian Reserve (DOR) is the clinical term when AMH comes back lower than expected for your age, sometimes paired with a higher FSH or a lower antral follicle count (AFC) on ultrasound. It is one of the most Googled fertility topics out there, and also one of the most misunderstood.

What a Low AMH Result Does and Doesn’t Tell You
Let’s clear a few things up:
- It does NOT mean you’re out of options. Even a smaller number of eggs can include genetically normal, high-quality ones.
- It does NOT mean assisted reproduction won’t work. Many people with DOR go on to have successful retrievals and healthy pregnancies.
- It does NOT mean donor eggs are your only path forward, though that is always a valid and beautiful option if and when the time ever comes.
- AMH does not predict your ability to conceive naturally. It reflects quantity, not quality, and not destiny.
What it does tell us is that time and strategy matter. The goal is to optimize the eggs you do have, and that is exactly where we come in.
How Acupuncture Supports Low AMH and Ovarian Reserve
This is where things get genuinely exciting. The research on acupuncture for DOR and poor ovarian response has been growing, and the results are promising.
A 2025 randomized clinical trial found that acupuncture alongside an IVF protocol significantly increased the number of high-quality embryos available in patients with poor ovarian response, compared to IVF alone. Additional research shows acupuncture can increase the number of retrieved mature eggs, particularly in patients who have been through multiple stimulation cycles.
Here’s how acupuncture supports your ovarian health:
- Increases blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, delivering the oxygen and nutrients your follicles need to develop well
- Supports the HPO axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis) to help regulate FSH, LH, and estrogen toward a healthier balance
- Reduces systemic inflammation and cortisol, creating a more favorable hormonal environment for follicle development
- Has been shown to improve antral follicle count (AFC) in clinical studies, meaning more visible, active follicles at the start of a cycle
We recommend starting acupuncture 8 to 12 weeks before an IVF retrieval when DOR is part of your picture. That’s 2 to 3 full menstrual cycles and enough time to support follicle development from its earliest stages. The sooner we start, the more we can do together.
What Else Can We Add to Your Plan?
Acupuncture works best as part of a whole-person approach. Here’s what we layer in alongside treatment:
Inito hormone monitoring: Tracking your FSH, LH, estrogen, and progesterone at home gives us real-time data so we can personalize your care throughout the cycle.
CoQ10 in Ubiquinol form: Supports mitochondrial energy production in your eggs, which directly influences chromosomal health during maturation. We work with you on the right dose.
Vitamin D optimization: Research links higher Vitamin D levels to better ovarian response and improved IVF outcomes. We run your levels and supplement accordingly.
Warm, protein-forward meals and bone broth: In TCM, nourishing kidney essence is foundational to ovarian health. In practical terms, it means fueling your body with what it needs to thrive.
Heat on the lower abdomen: A castor oil pack, a moxa stick, or even a gentle heat pad supports circulation to your reproductive organs.
Red light therapy: We use red light therapy in clinic for its ability to support ATP production at the cellular level, giving your follicles more energy to develop.

Questions We Hear All the Time
Q: Can my AMH level improve?
It can. While we can’t reverse time, consistent acupuncture, targeted supplements, and lifestyle changes have been associated with improvements in AMH and antral follicle count. We focus on making the most of what you have right now.
Q: How and when do I get AMH tested?
Any day of your cycle works since AMH stays stable throughout the month. Your OB or primary care provider can order it, or you can use an at-home kit like Modern Fertility. We can also run labs for you directly.
Q: My cycles are regular. Do I still need IVF?
Not necessarily. Regular ovulation is a great sign, and many people with low AMH conceive naturally or with minimal support. AMH alone doesn’t determine your path forward — your full picture does.
Q: When should I start acupuncture before IVF?
Ideally 8 to 12 weeks before your retrieval. That said, starting at any point in your IVF process is worthwhile. Come in whenever you’re ready — we’ll meet you where you are.
Q: What’s the difference between DOR and POI?
DOR means lower ovarian reserve with regular cycles and active ovulation. POI is a separate condition where ovarian function is significantly reduced before age 40, often with irregular or absent periods. Both are conditions we support here at Aphrodite.
Q: Can I still do IVF with low AMH?
Absolutely. Many REIs specialize in tailored protocols for patients with DOR, and acupuncture complements that process beautifully. We work alongside your IVF team every step of the way.
You Are More Than a Number on a Lab Report
A low AMH result is information. And information, in the right hands, becomes a plan.
Some of the most joyful pregnancy announcements we’ve celebrated at Aphrodite have come from people who walked in holding a DOR diagnosis, feeling like hope was far away. We’ve watched that change. We’ve been part of that change.
We see you. We’ve got you. And we are ready to get to work.
