Acupuncture during pregnancy is one of the most underutilized tools available to pregnant women, and one of the most effective. Whether you’re dealing with morning sickness, back pain, anxiety, or simply want to give your pregnancy the best possible support from start to finish, prenatal acupuncture offers something that very few other interventions can: safe, drug-free, whole-body care that works with your physiology rather than overriding it.
At Aphrodite Fertility Acupuncture in San Diego, pregnancy care is a core part of what we do. We’ve supported women through every stage of pregnancy: from the anxious first trimester through labor induction and into the postpartum period. Here’s everything you need to know.
Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?
This is always the first question and the answer is yes, when performed by a trained practitioner who understands prenatal contraindications. There are specific acupuncture points that are avoided during pregnancy, and a qualified practitioner knows exactly which ones and why. When practiced correctly, acupuncture has an excellent safety record in pregnancy and is used widely in integrative obstetric care around the world.
At Aphrodite, every practitioner has specific training in prenatal acupuncture. We know which points are safe at which stages of pregnancy, adjust our protocols accordingly at every visit, as well as proper positioning (for example, the left side-lying position in the second trimester to optimize blood flow and keep both mom and baby safe and comfortable).
Treatments are designed to support circulation, reduce inflammation, address week by week symptoms, and regulate the nervous system.
When to start pregnancy acupuncture
First trimester (weeks 1–12)
The first trimester is when acupuncture can make one of its most dramatic contributions. Morning sickness — which for many women is all-day sickness — responds remarkably well to acupuncture treatment. We also support the body through the profound hormonal shift of early pregnancy, address spotting and cramping when present, and help regulate the anxiety that’s almost universal in the first trimester, especially for women who have experienced pregnancy loss.
Many women are hesitant to start acupuncture in the first trimester because pregnancy feels fragile. In fact, this is one of the periods where we can do the most meaningful work.
Second trimester (weeks 13–27)
The second trimester is typically the most comfortable period of pregnancy, but it brings its own set of physical challenges. Back pain, sciatica, round ligament pain, heartburn, and fatigue are all extremely common — and all respond well to acupuncture. We also continue to support hormonal balance and emotional wellbeing through this period.
Third trimester (weeks 28–40+)
The third trimester is when acupuncture becomes particularly valuable for physical symptoms — the musculoskeletal load of a growing belly, hip pain, pelvic girdle pain, and swelling. We also begin preparing the body for labor during this period, with specific protocols designed to ripen the cervix, encourage optimal fetal positioning, and support the physiological readiness for birth.
The first trimester is often where acupuncture has the most immediate and noticeable impact. Symptoms like nausea, fatigue, and insomnia tend to come in waves—and acupuncture can bring quick relief. This is when many patients need the most support. After their first treatment, patients often report reduced nausea, better sleep, and more stable energy, along with relief from muscle tension and inflammation.

Labor induction acupuncture — a specialty within a specialty
Labor induction acupuncture is one of the most requested services we provide at Aphrodite. When a pregnancy is approaching or past the due date, or when a care provider has recommended induction, many women prefer to try acupuncture first — to encourage the body to begin labor naturally before resorting to medical induction.
We use a specific labor induction protocol that stimulates the points associated with uterine contractions, cervical ripening, and descent of the baby. Many of our patients go into labor within 24–72 hours of treatment. We’re honest that it doesn’t work for everyone — but when it does, it allows for a more physiologically natural start to labor.
Labor induction acupuncture is designed to encourage the body to begin its natural cascade of labor hormones. After the sessions, some patients notice waves of cramping, increased pelvic pressure, or more active baby movement—these are all signs the body is responding. For some, labor begins within 24–72 hours, while for others it’s more of a gradual shift.
The moxibustion protocol for breech presentation
Moxibustion — the burning of a dried herb called mugwort near the acupuncture point BL67 on the little toe — is a well-researched intervention for encouraging a breech baby to turn. The protocol is typically performed daily at home by the patient for two weeks, ideally between weeks 33–36 of pregnancy when there is still sufficient room for the baby to turn.
The evidence for moxibustion is stronger than many people realize — multiple studies have shown it to be effective in reducing breech presentation at delivery. We teach our patients the technique and provide the moxa sticks so they can continue the protocol at home between appointments.
Postpartum acupuncture
The postpartum period — the fourth trimester — is one of the most physically and emotionally demanding of a woman’s life, and one of the most underserved by conventional medicine. At Aphrodite, we treat postpartum women for:
- Postpartum anxiety, rage, and depression
- Fatigue and iron deficiency
- Milk supply and lactation support
- C-section scar treatment
- Back and wrist pain from nursing and carrying
- Insomnia
- Hormone regulation and cycle return
| Postpartum is such a wild ride and acupuncture can help get you feeling like yourself again, faster. |
Frequently asked questions
Can acupuncture help with morning sickness?
Yes — this is one of the most well-documented applications of acupuncture in pregnancy. The point PC6 (Neiguan), located on the inner wrist, has been studied extensively for nausea and is effective for many women. Combined with additional digestive and hormonal support points, we see significant improvement in morning sickness symptoms in the majority of our first-trimester patients.
How often should I get acupuncture during pregnancy?
It depends on what you’re treating. For acute symptoms like severe morning sickness or back pain, we often recommend twice weekly until the symptoms improve. For general pregnancy wellness and support, weekly or every two weeks is typical. In the third trimester, weekly treatment for labor preparation is common from around week 36 onward.
Can acupuncture cause miscarriage?
This concern comes up frequently and it’s worth addressing directly. There are specific acupuncture points that are contraindicated in pregnancy and are avoided by all trained prenatal acupuncturists. When these contraindications are respected, acupuncture does not cause miscarriage. We are specifically trained in prenatal protocols and take these precautions seriously.
Do you treat high-risk pregnancies?
We treat many patients with pregnancy complications — placenta previa, placenta accreta, threatened miscarriage, preterm labor history, and more. We work in close communication with your OB or midwife in these cases and always defer to their guidance on treatment. Acupuncture can be a valuable support in complex pregnancies, but coordination of care is essential.
Can I start acupuncture if I’ve never had it before?
Absolutely. Many of our patients have their first acupuncture experience during pregnancy. Your first appointment includes a thorough intake, an explanation of what to expect, and a gentle treatment. Most patients are surprised by how relaxing it is.
