You cannot make more eggs, but you can influence the quality of the ones maturing right now, and the window to do it is about 90 days before your retrieval. Each batch of follicles your ovaries recruit spends roughly three months developing before an IVF cycle collects them. During that stretch, blood sugar, thyroid function, sleep, sperm quality on the other side, and stress all leave a mark on how those eggs mature. This is the single best time to prepare, and it is the reason we start egg-quality work a full cycle or two before stimulation rather than the week before.

Why the 90-day window matters

An egg is not created the month you retrieve it. Primordial follicles wake up and go through a long maturation process, and the final 90 or so days are when they become metabolically active and hungry for energy. That final stage is where the environment you provide shows up in the egg. Good control of blood sugar, a thyroid in range, adequate vitamin D, and lower oxidative stress give the mitochondria inside each egg what they need to power fertilization and early division.

This is also why last-minute fixes rarely move the needle. Starting a supplement three days before retrieval does not undo three months of erratic sleep or unmanaged blood sugar. Starting three months out does.

What supports egg quality

Foundations first

  • Blood sugar stability: repeated glucose spikes drive inflammation that reaches the ovary. Protein-forward meals and fewer refined carbs matter more than any pill.
  • Thyroid in range: even mildly high TSH or Hashimoto’s antibodies can affect egg maturation and early pregnancy. Ask your clinic for a full thyroid panel, not just TSH.
  • Sleep and circadian rhythm: the ovary responds to melatonin, which follows your light and dark cycle. Consistent sleep is not a luxury here.
  • Vitamin D: low levels show up in follicular fluid and correlate with weaker outcomes. Test and correct rather than guess.

Targeted support

  • CoQ10: supports mitochondrial energy production in the egg, with the most interest in women over 35. Doses in studies often run high, so review it with your provider.
  • Sperm quality on the other side: half the embryo is sperm. Antioxidant support, heat avoidance, and 90 days of the male partner’s own preparation change fertilization and embryo grades.

Where acupuncture fits

Compared with no added treatment, acupuncture has been linked in reviews to higher clinical pregnancy and live-birth rates. The clearest egg-quality signal is in older patients: a randomized trial in women over 37 found more mature oocytes retrieved when acupuncture was added to IVF, and a separate review reported more good-quality embryos in older women. Acupuncture will not rewrite your AMH or your age. For women over 37 and for poor responders, it is one of the better-supported tools we have, alongside blood sugar, thyroid, and sleep.

What egg-quality prep looks like at Aphrodite

We start with your labs, not a template. That means reviewing your AMH, FSH, thyroid panel, and vitamin D, then building a plan for the 90 days before your retrieval. Weekly or biweekly acupuncture supports blood flow to the ovaries and lowers the stress load. We coordinate with your fertility clinic so the plan fits your specific protocol rather than working against it. Over eight years and more than 1,000 San Diego women helped to conceive, the pattern is consistent: the women who prepare early walk into stimulation in a stronger position.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really improve egg quality, or is it fixed by age?
Age sets the baseline and you cannot change your age or your egg count. You can influence the maturation environment of the eggs developing right now through blood sugar, thyroid, sleep, vitamin D, and lower oxidative stress. That is what egg-quality work targets.

How long before IVF should I start preparing my eggs?
About 90 days, because the follicles collected at retrieval mature over roughly three months. Earlier is better if you have the time.

Does CoQ10 help egg quality?
CoQ10 supports the mitochondria that power the egg, and interest is highest in women over 35. Study doses tend to be high, so confirm the amount with your provider rather than guessing.

Does acupuncture improve egg quality for IVF?
The strongest evidence is in egg-quality signal in women over 37 and in poor responders. A randomized trial in women over 37 found more mature eggs retrieved with acupuncture added to IVF. It is a support, not a guarantee.

What if my AMH is low?
Low AMH means fewer eggs, not necessarily poor quality. The plan shifts toward protecting the quality of each egg you do have and coordinating closely with your clinic on protocol and timing.
